LOOK MA, NO HANDS: Hapless Grizzlies look on as Nuggets prove they can win without Melo.

DENVER- The Denver Nuggets pulled off the unexpected Monday night Feb. 22, at the Pepsi Center. They won.

In the first game since the blockbuster three-team trade that sent Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups and three other Nuggets to the New York Knicks, Denver (33-25) defeated the Memphis Grizzlies (32-27) 120-107.

“We feel like we got killed in the trade,” Nuggets executive vice president of operations Masai Ujiri said in a press conference prior to the game. “I feel sad for the city of Denver. I feel bad this was done on my watch.”

The Nuggets only dressed eight players for the game, but jumped out to a commanding 20-point lead in the second quarter. J.R. Smith led the Nuggets and matched a game high with 26 points.

While Ujiri expressed his remorse over the circumstances surrounding the trade, many Nuggets fans had a brighter outlook.  “They looked good tonight. Melo wanted to leave, so he got his wish,” said Tina Espinoza, a fan in section 132. “I’m glad the Carmelo drama is finally over.”

The Pepsi Center, although at about half capacity, had an auspicious buzz. Fans throughout the arena were weighing in on the deal. While opinions on value the Nuggets received in return were mixed, everyone agreed that something had to give.

“If we didn’t trade him before Thursday, then we were going to lose him after the season and get nothing in return,” Nuggets fan Tyler Treantos said.  “This way we got a bunch of draft picks, and young talent in return.”

After the game the Nuggets head coach George Karl said, “I might be crazy, but I think we can make the playoffs and I also think we can be a threat to win in the playoffs.”

Along with Anthony and Billups the Nuggets sent Sheldon Williams, Renaldo Balkman and Anthony Carter to New York in exchange for Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, a 2014 first round pick and additional draft picks and cash.
