Melaine Rice’s Mark Of Excellence Award for Online Feature Stories.

DENVER, Auraria Campus — Metro Post-Telegraph reporter Melaine J. Rice won first place in the  SPJ Region 9 Mark of Excellence Awards in Online Feature Stories category for her article “Women wear invisible cloak of homelessness.”

The  awards ceremony was part of the SPJ Region 9 Spring Conference, held on the Auraria Campus April 24 & 25, followed by a luncheon held April 25 that was open to professional and student journalist.

Rice’s “Women wear invisible cloak of homelessness” was also a finalist in the SPJ Online News Stories category. In addition, Rice received first place awards in the “Breaking News Photography” and “General News” categories.

SPJ Region 9 awards honored student journalist finalists and winners from 48 categories. The four-state area that makes up region 9 includes: Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming.

MSU Denver students garnered 18 awards, total, with seven first place awards. The winning entries from each category go on to the national competition. The national awards will be presented at the SPJ annual convention in September 2015.
