DENVER, Auraria Campus–Cars can be a tricky thing, and it doesn’t always help when you have to drive home from school late at night, or you have to get a jump-start because your car won’t start. Just when you think you have no more options, there’s a service you can call that can get the job done: NightRider.

The service doesn’t come in the form of a highly advanced talking car, but you do receive someone who will help you when you are in need of a pick up or help at the end of the day. The NightRider program is a free security escort service provided by the Auraria campus that allows students to call for a ride to anywhere on campus or to the car in a parking lot from dusk until 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

NightRider was introduced over 20 years ago and has been a safe “backup” for any student that would like to get to the car in a hurry.

“Although the Auraria Campus is one of the safest urban campuses in the country, the program was introduced to provide additional safety for our constituents,” says Dave Berry, manager of the Auraria Parking and Transportation Services

Although there are many positions that students on the Auraria Campus can volunteer for, the NightRider is not one of them.

“Drivers must be an employee of the Auraria Higher Education Center with a valid driver’s license,” Berry says. What makes this such a unique service is the fact that all you have to do is pick up the phone and call in order to get a ride to your car.

Along with NightRider, the Auraria Campus offers other services to students. “The Auraria Higher Education Center provides the Handivan service for disabled student, staff and faculty. Additionally, there is a motorist assist program available to parking customers that will provide a “ jump start” to a dead battery, assist in the changing of a flat tire or supply a gallon of gas that will allow drivers to get to one of the nearby gas stations.

The motorist assist program is provided at no additional charge. The NightRider is a great way to get from one point on campus to another in a hurry without the pressure of walking late at night. Just don’t expect the car to talk to you.

It’s weird to think about how long this service has been around but yet not a lot of students know about it. It’s cool to see how much the school cares about the safety of its students.

Loved how you opened this story! I was immediately interested; drew my attention in right away. Also liked how at the end you’ve included information, office hours and operational hours.

I loved this story. It was well written. I had never heard of night rider before this, and I know I’m not the only one. It’s great that students have an option of getting to their car safely at night.
