DENVER — Metropolitan’s State University of Denver’s Trio Student Support Services program is doing some great things on campus.  It is a program designed to help low-income students, first-generation college students and students with disabilities stay in college and graduate by providing support for their needs.

They offer multiple programs and workshops to help students make it through college with a degree in their hand. The programs identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.   They only help 200 students per semester, so space is limited, but if one is able to receive their help they will truly be thankful.

“Based on my experience working with other federally funded programs, I will say that Trio SSS is one of the programs with the most highly trained and highly skilled professionals I have ever seen,” said Sherie Munoz, director of the Trio SSS program.

Trio SSS has been established since 1976.  For 38 years the program has being doing any and everything to help students meet their goals.  The program has made leaps and bounds since its beginning and continues to improve.  In the year 2007-2008 81 participants were served in the Trio SSS program.  Of those 81 students 35.8 percent graduated within six years.  In the year 2012 – 2013 Trio SSS served 197 students.  93.4 percent of those students continued in their education, graduated, or transferred from a 2 year college to a 4 year college.  Each year the participation in the program exceeds and Trio SSS continues to leave its mark on the world.

Trio SSS offers many services for students to use to reach their academic goals.  They offer Academic support and guidance, skill-building workshops, peer mentorship, graduate school and career preparation, financial planning, social and cultural events, and leadership and advocacy.  Students can find whatever help it is that they need through this program.  Anyone can succeed with the help of Trio SSS.

“Tutoring is really important because that’s the thing that students want and that’s what brings them in.  Once they receive the tutoring in our office they start to realize the benefits of the other services that we offer and start to take advantage of them, but tutoring is super important for academic success,” said Stephanie Martin Shewfelt, academic learning specialist.

Space is limited to receive the services of Trio Student Support Services.  They can only serve 200 students per school year so it is best to apply early to get a lead on other applicants.  One must be eligible to apply for Trio Student Support Services.    One must be a citizen of the United States, one must be enrolled in classes at the university, one must be seeking a degree, and one must demonstrate a need for academic help.  If you meet each one of these requirements then you might just be able to receive their services.

Trio Student Support Services is a great program to help those seeking assistance in their classes.  They have many great professionals waiting to help and put whomever on the right path to success.  It doesn’t matter what subject it is that you need help with.  Trio Student Support Services has a specialist in every subject.  If you feel like you could use a little extra help stop by their office in the Student Success Building.  They would be happy to help and you won’t regret it.
