DENVER, Auraria Campus-In today’s world, it is becoming more and more common for parents to graduate with their children. What is truly uncommon is individual steps taken with-in the journey. Tonia Washington and her son Raymond will be graduating from Metropolitan State University at the same time next year.

Being raised by a single mother and seeing how she struggled, Raymond understood the need of an education.  A fact his mother continues to support by attending classes herself. Washington’s father efforts and his own accomplishments is what encourage her to complete her degree.  Sadly, Tonia lost her father in 2012.   There are more than enough family members ready to support her and give an encouraging word.

“It doesn’t matter when or how – because if it was easy everyone would be doing it!!!” says her sister Angie.

Tonia Washington was born on April 29, 1968 with a family that consist of  two siblings, one older sister Angie,  and younger brother  Edward .  Angie her older sister also obtain her degree, which was in Media Communication. She later became an entrepreneur selling the jewelry she made and the jewelry of others in and out of state.   Her brother Edward, who is an IT Consultant and her Mother who mentioned with such pride.

“I am so glad that she made the decision to make this type of life investment,” her mother says.

Well known for her own accomplishments, Tonia’s mother was the Director of the Gallium Detention Center.  Her father was the Educational Consultant for Aramark Inc.  It is clear that structure has always been a part of Tonia’s family.

It would be this same structure that would be utilized in the rearing of her son Raymond.   Since education has always been a part of her family history, it is not strange to see her child excel in classes as an English Lit major at Metro.    Raymond’s love of school doesn’t stop with him; he is just as passionate about his child education as he is with his own.   Tonia granddaughter Tatum is a very intelligent and well-mannered little girl who loves to read.

With the love of family and friends, Tonia has many hobbies and interest, ranging from movies to music. But cooking, shopping and reality TV is her favorite pastime.   In fact, once she has broken down one of her favorites show to you, you’re sure to be hooked.     The reality of life is just as important, which does not only include family but friends.

As the ambassador of North East Denver this privilege has allowed her to work with the youth not only out in the field but at home as well.  By opening up her home to spend time with young women, it has allowed her the opportunity to be connected in order to help young women.

The most recent was the Montebello Cheerleading squad where she invited the squad over for a sleep over to watch movies and discussed conflict within and outside the team.  The goal was the have the team build stronger bonds by breaking down the clique that were already establish with in the team.   This would be achieved by separating the clique and watch how new friendships would begin to develope.

While completing her degree, Tonia enjoys selling oils, “Being comfortable at home is the most import thing to me, that why I love to sell oils.” She says. “I wanted to share my experience of how the use of oils in the home can have a calming effect over ones home.”

As time continues , by one book, oil,  youth project or family outing, Tonia is connected to the life around her as well as the life she is striving for in the future after graduation.   Who knew that so many business minded individuals  were within Tonia Washington family, she may have her own family owed PR firm to run one day.
